Quick answer
Is the BOB Gear Alterrain Pro worth it?
The bottom line
Runs and rough trails, with a hand brake for steep hills
Big air tires and suspension help smooth out rough ground. You can squeeze the hand brake to slow down on hills. It's a big, heavy stroller that suits trails. You won't want to load and unload it from a small trunk all day.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Who it's for
- Great for runners and trail walkers. It has big air tires, suspension and a hand brake for hills.
- Your kid can ride in it well into the preschool years.
Who should skip it
- Skip it if you want to run with a young baby. The seat is for walks from 8 weeks, and runs start at 8 months.
- Skip it if you want a light stroller to toss in the car.
The numbers that matter
It's easy to push on trails but heavy to lift into the car.
Your preschooler can still ride while you run.
Room for water, snacks and spare clothes, not groceries.
Tall parents can stand up straight while they run.
Made for the gravel path
This is the stroller for the walk where the sidewalk ends. Big air-filled tires and SmoothShox suspension roll over gravel, packed dirt and grass at the park. Small plastic wheels just bounce on that stuff. These soak it up.
Going downhill? Squeeze the handbrake to slow down without letting go of the handle. When you stop, step on the foot brake so it stays put.
The front wheel swivels for easy turns on a walk. Lock it straight when you want to run. The handle moves up and down, so you and your partner can each set it where it feels right. Tall parent, short parent, both happy.
Walks now, runs later
From birth, you can use an infant car seat for walks. It needs an adapter, and both are sold separately. Your baby can ride in the seat itself from 8 weeks, also just for walks. Running and rough trails start at 8 months. So the first months are slow loops around the block, and the jogging comes later.
The seat reclines almost flat with one hand. That helps when your baby falls asleep halfway around the lake.
It keeps going for years
The seat holds kids up to 75 lb. That's room for a big preschooler who'd rather ride than walk the last mile home. If you run, you'll get a lot of years out of it.
The basket holds 10 lb. That's water, snacks, sunscreen and a spare shirt. It's built for a run or a hike, not a big grocery stop.
The workout after the workout
The fold is one step with one hand, and it stands up once it's folded. That's handy in a trailhead parking lot while you buckle your kid in.
It weighs 32.3 lb, and it's long when folded. You'll feel that lift after a run, when your legs are done and your arms aren't far behind. Popping the wheels off makes it smaller, but now you've got loose wheels to load too.
If you drive to almost everything and only run once a week, think hard about that lift.
What parents say
One former nanny found the Alterrain Pro's fold awkward and long once it's folded. Source (opens in a new tab)
