A jogger can be great on rough paths but awkward in shops. Compare the running rules, wheel sizes, weight and fold.

Short answer

Get a jogging stroller only if you really plan to run with your baby. Most joggers aren't meant for running until about 6 to 8 months, so check your model. For walks and errands, a regular or travel stroller is usually easier to live with.

Buy a jogger for runs or rough daily paths

If you want to run with your baby, start with jogging strollers. If your usual outing is the school run or a walk to a cafe, try a regular stroller first. A jogger makes sense for walking, too, when rough ground is a bigger problem than storage.

Look at the BOB Gear Revolution Flex 3.0 for a concrete trade-off. It has air-filled 12 in front and 16 in rear tires, suspension and a locking front swivel wheel. It also weighs 28.5 lb and folds to 38 L × 25 W × 16 H in with its wheels on.

What the big wheels buy you

One parent who lives on gravel roads calls their BOB a must for getting walks and chores done. (What to Expect)

Another parent's family uses the earlier Urban Glide 2 for jogs on limestone trails. The seat sits quite far back, so they're glad it isn't their only stroller. They keep a lighter one for shops and tight spaces. Check how that trail stroller turns and parks at the zoo or a restaurant too. (What to Expect)

Compare a walking stroller before going bigger

The Cruz V3 weighs 26.5 lb and has never-flat tires with dual-spring suspension. It is only 2 lb lighter than the Revolution Flex 3.0, so do not assume every regular stroller is much lighter. Its reversible seat and 30 lb basket limit offer a different set of daily benefits.

The Thule Urban Glide 3 weighs 26.2 lb and folds to 34.6 L × 22.8 W × 12.2 H in. It has 16 in air-filled tires and a twist hand brake. Compare the folded shapes as well as the weights; check which leaves more useful room beside your shopping bags.

Use full-size strollers and wheels and terrain to compare walking options. You do not have to plan runs to care about a smoother trip across cracked pavement.

Walking ages are different from running ages

For the Revolution Flex 3.0, the seat starts at 8 weeks for walking only. Jogging and off-road use have an 8-month minimum. From-birth use with an infant car seat is also walking only.

Use the rules for the model you own. When to start using a jogger explains the split. Talk with your pediatrician before the first run too.

What I'd test before buying

Try a tight turn, a doorway and the fold before falling for the outdoor push. Lift the empty stroller over your trunk lip and see where the wheels land. Choose a frame that fits without unloading the whole car.

I'd buy the jogger if runs are part of the plan or rough paths shape most walks. If you mainly drive to smooth places, try a compact or full-size walking stroller for those outings.

Questions parents ask

Can I run with any three-wheel stroller?

Choose a model intended for running and follow its running setup and age rules. Three wheels alone do not settle that choice.

Can a jogger be my only stroller?

It can, if you can manage its fold and size on errands. Try tight shop turns as well as a straight outdoor path.
