Short answer

Before a walk, lock the frame fully open, buckle the five-point harness and check the brake. Keep bags in the basket within its limit and clear of the handle, then check recall details when buying or changing parts.

Start with the frame, buckle, brake and bags

Check four things: the open frame, harness, brake and bags. Keep your child away from the hinges as the frame folds. Lock it fully open before putting them in. (AAP) A frame that is almost open is a reason to stop and finish the setup.

Try the whole routine with the empty stroller before the first trip. You want to know where the locks and controls are without leaning past your child to search for them. If two adults share the stroller, each needs to be able to open and park it.

Buckle even for the short trip

Use a five-point harness on every ride, with straps over the shoulders, at the hips and between the legs. (AAP) A trip from the car to a shop still counts as a stroller ride. Give yourself time to adjust the straps when your child's clothes or seat setup change.

Do not leave your child unattended in the stroller, including when they fall asleep. Keep them in view. (AAP) That means the stroller parked beside a cafe table still needs your attention while you eat or sort a bag.

Learn the brake before a slope surprises you

Use the brake whenever you stop, and keep its release out of your child's reach. (AAP) Test how it feels with the shoes you wear most. Try the control in both trainers and boots; check which foot angle works in each.

Brakes work differently across models. The Thule Urban Glide 3 has a twist hand brake. The BOB Alterrain Pro has a handbrake plus a foot parking brake. Learn which control handles each task on your model instead of carrying a habit over from another stroller.

Put the load low and within the basket limit

Bags on the handle can tip a stroller backward. Use the basket instead. (AAP) The basket limit varies a lot: the Baby Trend Expedition allows 5 lb, the Minu V3 allows 20 lb and the Cruz V3 allows 30 lb.

That difference matters when the changing bag shares space with lunch and groceries. A child weight limit is separate from the basket allowance. If your load keeps growing, choose a basket that can do the job instead of adding more to the handle.

Be easy to see once the clocks change

When clocks go back in early November, it gets dark earlier. Dusk can start around 5 p.m. in many places, and drivers need to watch extra closely for people on foot. (NHTSA) A walk that starts late in the afternoon now often ends in the dark.

Use sidewalks, and cross at crosswalks or corners, not mid-block. With no crosswalk, pick a well-lit spot with a clear view of traffic. Make eye contact with the driver and wait for a full stop before you cross. (NHTSA) Keep your phone away and skip the earbuds while you walk. (NSC)

Stroller lights and reflectors

Wear bright colors in the day. After dark, add something reflective and carry a flashlight. (NHTSA) A small light clipped to the stroller works too. (Seattle DOT)

Check the exact model when parts change hands

Search the CPSC recall database when buying used or checking a hand-me-down. Match the product label with the notice's model and lot details. The recall guide uses an actual notice to show what that match looks like.

I'd make a quick frame, harness, brake and basket check part of each departure. A large purchase price does not replace those steps. The safety sources below cover the broader stroller rule, recalls and infant car seat recalls for a system with both parts.

Questions parents ask

Can a quick ride skip the harness?

Use the five-point harness on every ride, even a short one. It has shoulder, hip and between-the-legs straps.

Where should the diaper bag go?

In the basket within its load limit. Bags on the handle can tip the stroller backward.
