Quick answer
Is the Doona X worth it?
The bottom line
Buy it for the car-to-sidewalk shuffle, not for long walks.
- Why we picked it
- The car seat turns into a stroller, so you don't have to move a sleeping baby.
- Watch out for
- It fits babies up to 30 lb and 32 in tall, so you'll need another stroller later. There's no basket built in.
If you're in and out of the car all day, yes. It's a rear-facing infant car seat with wheels built in. You lift it out of the car, pop the wheels down, and you're pushing a stroller.
That's the whole trick, and it's a good one. No stroller frame to haul out of the trunk. No unbuckling a baby who finally fell asleep.
The catch? It's heavy for a car seat, it has no basket, and your baby will outgrow it long before they're done riding in strollers. Think of it as a car seat that rolls, not your forever stroller.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Who it's for
- Great if you're in and out of the car a lot and want the car seat and stroller in one.
- Handy on trips, since the car seat is approved for use on planes.
Who should skip it
- Not for you if you want one stroller that lasts into the toddler years.
- There's no basket under the seat. You can add one later. Doona sells two that clip on, the Storage Basket and the Pack & Go Basket, which turns into a backpack. Both cost extra.
The numbers that matter
That's before your baby's in it. You'll still lift the whole thing into the car.
It folds and unfolds with the click of a button.
Once your baby hits this, it's time for a regular stroller.
Whichever limit your baby hits first is the end of the road.
Three recline spots for naps on the go. Stroller mode only.
Handy when you and your partner aren't the same height.
From the car to the sidewalk in one move
Here's how a normal trip goes. You unclick the seat from its base, lift it out and let the wheels down. Now you're pushing a stroller, and your baby hasn't moved an inch.
Going back is the same thing in reverse. Fold the wheels up and click the seat into its base.
A LATCH base comes in the box, so you don't have to buy one to get started.
With the Doona X, I just got out, popped the wheels down and kept moving.
What it's like day to day
Wheels and ground
Small wheels like smooth ground
The Doona X rolls on small built-in wheels. Store floors, parking lots and smooth sidewalks are its home turf. Gravel and cracked pavement are not.
Naps
In stroller mode, the seat reclines to three spots, down to 159°. That's nice when your baby falls asleep at lunch. In the car, it stays at the car seat angle.
Pushing
The handlebar has two heights, and the wheels have a shock-absorbing system. The rear wheels have a parking brake.
Stuff
There's no basket under the seat. You can add one later. Doona sells two that clip on, the Storage Basket and the Pack & Go Basket, which turns into a backpack. Both cost extra.
Flying with it
The Doona X car seat is certified for use on aircraft, installed with the lap belt. So if you buy your baby a seat, the Doona can go on it.
What parents say
Parents love the quick switch from car to stroller. The big complaint is the weight.
I could absolutely manage it, but it's the kind of weight you feel, especially if you're reaching into a higher SUV or carrying it more than a few feet.

When it's outgrown
The Doona X goes by your baby's size, not age. It fits babies 17 to 32 in tall and up to 30 lb. When your baby passes either one, you're done.
At that point you'll need two things: a convertible car seat and a stroller.
